Direct Cremation
No service. Basic transfer and ashes returned.

Service type. Direct cremation without a ceremony is the most affordable path. Adding a chapel service, viewings, or a dual-location burial significantly increases cost.
Coffin selection. Standard coffins start around $400. Premium timber options can reach $6,000+. The coffin alone can be the largest single line item.
Location. Metropolitan prices are typically 15–25% higher than regional areas. Venue and crematorium fees vary significantly between states.
Many providers quote a headline service price that excludes the following costs. Ask about each before committing.
Mortuary & preparation fees
Often quoted separately from the coffin. Can add $400–$900.
After-hours transfer fee
Charged when the deceased is collected outside business hours. $150–$400.
Refrigeration beyond 48 hours
Daily fee if the service is delayed. $50–$100 per day.
Death certificate registration
Some providers charge $75–$150 for a service that costs $60 through BDM direct.
Burial plot (burial only)
Not included in service fees. $3,000–$25,000+ depending on cemetery.
Coffin upgrade
Standard coffins start at $400. Upgrades can reach $6,000+ for premium timber.
