How much does a funeral cost in South Australia?

Funerals Direct editorial teamUpdated 20 May 20269 min read

South Australia generally sits at the lower end of the national funeral pricing range. Centennial Park in Adelaide has the cheapest published cremation fee of the major operators we compared, at $510. There is no official national funeral price index to check the broader picture against, though. Funeral pricing is not collected by any government body, so treat any national or state average you see as indicative only.

An important caveat: SA pricing data relies more heavily on national provider rates and aggregator estimates than on primary local provider price lists. Fewer SA funeral directors publish itemised pricing online compared to NSW, Victoria, or Queensland. The ranges here represent the best available data, but local quotes may differ from these published figures.

Every price here is a base advertised package price unless labelled otherwise. The per-provider figures in the tables below are drawn from publicly available provider pricing (mostly national operators advertising "from" prices), last reviewed June 2026. They are indicative, subject to change, and may not reflect a final quote. Request an itemised quote from any provider before signing anything.

Before you rely on the numbers

Treat every dollar figure in this guide as a working guide, not a fixed quote. Funeral prices change by provider, suburb, cemetery, crematorium and the choices made by the family. Before you sign an arrangement, ask for an itemised written quote that separates the funeral director's professional service fee from third-party costs like the crematorium, cemetery, celebrant, flowers, notices and death certificate fees.

Ask which items are legally required and which are optional. If a fee is not clear, ask what it covers before approving it.

Direct cremation in South Australia

Published prices: $1,699 to $5,454 across eight brands

Direct cremation is a cremation without a service. No ceremony, no mourners, no chapel. The funeral director handles the logistics and returns the ashes.

Provider pricing (advertised base packages):

ProviderPriceNotes
Willed$2,099National direct provider
Bare Cremation$2,599 to $3,208National direct provider
Salvos Funerals$2,788 to $3,124Not-for-profit, national

Eight South Australian brands listed on this site publish a direct cremation price on their own website. Those eight run from $1,699 to $5,454, with a midpoint of $2,292. Eight is below the twelve publishing brands we require before printing a median, so the range and the count are given here instead of a single headline figure, and a small sample can move on one listing. Figures computed 5 August 2026. A 2019 Gathered Here report put the SA average at $2,829; it is seven years old, it is a third party's figure rather than ours, and its ceiling understates what South Australian providers actually publish today.

No local independent SA funeral director price lists were available in our research. This is a data gap. Local providers may charge more or less than the national operators listed above. Request quotes directly from Adelaide-based providers to compare.

How much does a cremation cost in Australia?

Burial in South Australia

Estimated range: $7,500 to $15,000+ (funeral director fees plus cemetery)

Burial pricing data for SA is limited. No itemised burial packages from SA-based funeral directors were available in our research. The range here is based on aggregator estimates and the national pricing patterns observed in other states.

The funeral director's fees for a burial service are broadly similar to their fees for a cremation with service. The cost difference is driven by cemetery fees: plot purchase, interment fee, and any maintenance levies.

Burial fee schedules for SA cemeteries were not available at the time of this research, although Centennial Park, Adelaide's largest cemetery, does publish its cremation fee (see below). Contact cemeteries directly for current burial pricing.

Crematorium fees in SA

SA crematorium fees are the lowest of the major operators we compared. Centennial Park in Adelaide charges $510 for a standard adult cremation. Published fees elsewhere run to $650 at Macquarie Park in Sydney, $1,210 at Springvale Botanical in Melbourne, $1,422 at the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board in Perth and $1,838 at Thorak Regional Cemetery in Darwin. All are GST inclusive and effective 1 July 2026. This is the crematorium's own charge and sits separately from the funeral director's fee.

Lower crematorium fees are part of why SA sits cheaper overall, but the fee is only one component of the invoice. The professional service fee, coffin, and transport charges generally make up the larger portion.

SA Government funeral assistance

The SA Government operates Funeral Assistance SA, a scheme that can cover the cost of a full contract funeral for individuals who meet the eligibility criteria. This is separate from the Centrelink bereavement payment available nationally.

Contact the SA Department of Human Services for current eligibility requirements and the application process.

Regulation and pricing transparency

Based on our own review of state and territory rules, four jurisdictions have funeral-specific pricing disclosure requirements: New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria. South Australia is not one of them, so SA funeral directors are not required to publish pricing online. This area keeps changing, so we review it regularly and update these guides as new rules take effect.

In our research, fewer SA funeral directors published itemised pricing compared to NSW, VIC, or QLD. National providers (Willed, Bare, Salvos) publish pricing covering SA, but local independent pricing requires direct inquiry. Burial fee schedules for major SA cemeteries were not publicly available at the time of writing either, although Centennial Park publishes its cremation fee.

Without published local pricing, families must phone providers for quotes, often under time pressure and while grieving. The ranges in this guide represent the best available data but should be verified with direct quotes from local providers.

What tends to affect the cost in SA

These are general points families commonly weigh up. None of this is advice; the right choice depends on individual circumstances.

National provider pricing as a baseline. Willed ($2,099), Bare ($2,599), and Salvos ($2,788 to $3,124) operate in SA and publish pricing. These published figures give families a comparison point for local quotes.

Itemised quotes. An itemised breakdown that separates the professional service fee, transfer, mortuary care, coffin, and cremation or cemetery charges makes it easier to compare providers like with like.

SA Government funeral assistance. Funeral Assistance SA may cover the full cost of a contract funeral for eligible individuals. Eligibility is set by the SA Government.

The bank funeral exception. Most major Australian banks will release funds to pay the funeral director's invoice directly from the deceased's frozen account before probate is granted. See paying for the funeral before probate.
