Burial (single service, median $8,200) plus a metropolitan cemetery plot regularly exceeds $15,000. Premium Sydney and Melbourne plots push the total above $30,000.
Death certificate gap. Six out of ten providers charge separately for death certificate registration, at fees of $75 to $150 per certificate. The same certificate costs $60 applied for directly through state Births, Deaths and Marriages. After-hours transfer fees are charged by the majority of providers but disclosed by fewer than 40%. Typical range: $150 to $400 per call-out.

Burial plot costs are separate and vary from under $1,000 at a regional cemetery to $25,000+ at a premium metropolitan cemetery. These figures are not included in the burial medians above.

The ACT and NT are consistently the most expensive markets. Both have limited provider competition and high operating costs. South Australia has the most competitive market, with multiple providers publishing direct cremation prices below $2,500.

What Australian families actually pay
The medians above are starting points. The total a family pays often differs from the headline package price. These are the most common items added to packages.
Coffin upgrades. Standard coffins included in most packages start around $400. Families regularly upgrade to pressed wood ($800 to $1,500) or solid timber ($2,000 to $6,000+). Some providers use coffin upgrades as their primary margin line.
Cemetery and crematorium fees. For burial, the cemetery plot is the single largest variable. Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney lists lawn plots from $4,200. Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Melbourne from $6,700. Rural plots are available from under $1,000.
Death certificates. Families typically need 3 to 5 certified copies for probate, bank notifications, and superannuation claims. At $60 to $90 per certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages, the total adds $180 to $450. Some providers include one certificate; many charge $75 to $150 per copy on top of the BDM fee.
Flowers and printed materials. Not a required cost but commonly added. Service booklets: $150 to $500. Floral arrangements: $200 to $1,200. These are optional but often presented as part of the arrangement process.
Celebrant fees. Many providers include a celebrant in their package price. When not included, independent celebrants charge $600 to $1,200 for a funeral service.
The pricing transparency gap
63% of the funeral directors in this review do not publish pricing on their website. This is not unusual by industry standards globally, but it creates a structural problem for families making decisions under time pressure and emotional duress.
Of providers who do publish pricing:
- ›41% publish a full itemised package breakdown
- ›34% publish a starting-from price only
- ›25% publish a price range without inclusions
The gap matters because funeral arrangements are often made within 24 to 48 hours of a death - a period when families have limited capacity to compare multiple providers, request written quotes, or push back on add-ons. Only New South Wales has a mandatory pricing disclosure law (the Funeral Information Standard). All other states rely on voluntary compliance.
Government assistance and entitlements
Department of Veterans' Affairs. The DVA Funeral Benefit covers funeral costs for eligible veterans and war widows/widowers. The benefit amount varies by entitlement and is reviewed periodically. Check current rates at dva.gov.au.
Centrelink Bereavement Payment. Available to the surviving partner of a Centrelink recipient for up to 14 weeks. It does not pay funeral costs directly but provides income support during bereavement.
State-level funeral assistance. Some state governments provide one-off funeral assistance payments to low-income families. Eligibility criteria and amounts vary by state. Contact your state's social services department or a financial counsellor.
Bank releases. Most Australian banks release funds from a deceased person's account directly to a funeral director without requiring probate - typically up to $15,000. This can help families cover costs before an estate is settled.
Superannuation. Most super funds hold a Death Benefit that can be released to cover funeral costs. Processing times vary; families should contact the fund early in the process.

Pricing data. Compiled through editorial review of publicly listed pricing on funeral director websites across Australia. Medians are calculated from providers who publish pricing; they do not include confidential or quote-only pricing. Providers who publish a price range are represented by the midpoint of that range.
Coverage. This report covers funeral directors listed on funeralsdirect.com.au as of May to June 2026. NSW (350+ providers), VIC (320+ providers), QLD (280+ providers), WA (180+ providers), SA (140+ providers), TAS (60+ providers), ACT (30+ providers), NT (20+ providers).
Limitations. Publicly listed prices may not reflect final quoted prices. Package inclusions vary between providers at the same price point. Prices change regularly and this report captures a point-in-time snapshot. Figures should be treated as indicative medians, not guaranteed costs.
